Colourful hobies can be seen along Plettenberg Bay’s Hobie Beach every December for the Robberg Fine Foods Classic Beach Regatta.

PLETTENBERG BAY - Plett is gearing up for a bumper festive season on the sports front with a number of favourite events taking place again.

One of these is the annual Robberg Fine Foods Classic Beach Regatta that sees Hobie Beach being transformed into a colourful spectacle as some of the country's top sailors make their way down to Plett to show off their skills.

The Robberg Fine Foods Classic Beach Regatta is held in Plettenberg Bay every December. It has become the premier beach catamaran event in the country and sailors come from across the country to take part. They spend three days racing in the bay with hobies, darts, nacras and other beach cats.

Off the water there will be a dinner as well as other opportunities for enthusiasts to meet the fleet. The organising team said while you don't have to be a champ to take part, you will certainly rub shoulders with some world-class sailors. "The racing is of a high quality. Everyone will be made to feel welcome as this is the friendliest fleet in the country," they said.

The event is not only enjoyed among sailors, but has become a favourite among residents and visitors who flock to the beach to see the colourful vessels and experience the vibe.

Spectators get to watch as the boats race "round the cans" - a set of buoys in the bay - or do a long-haul race from the mouth of the Keurbooms Lagoon all the way across to Robberg 5.

The event will take place at Hobie Beach from 16 to 18 December.
