Filmmakers eyeing Plett for production
PLETTENBERG BAY - Plett has been the backdrop for many films, series, music videos and other big and small screen productions over the years and recently caught the eye of various international film makers during a familiarisation trip along the Garden Route.
The tour, which included representatives from various US cities, was coordinated between Wesgro and Garden Route District Municipality and local visits were facilitated by Plett Tourism.
The Plettenberg Bay tour included visits to various establishments, estates, beaches and other natural attractions to highlight the area's offerings for the film industry.
"The group was amazing, very knowledgeable in their field of expertise, passionate about the industry and in awe of everything they saw and experienced," said Plett Tourism board member Linda Packwood. "I was so grateful for their enthusiasm, wonder and excitement which gave me a renewed appreciation of Plett, which I call home, and motivation to keep working with the film community as Plett really is the ideal film destination." She also represents a self-catering accommodation.
Plett Tourism engages with national and international film stakeholders to assist with a seamless film application process, working with the established teams at Bitou Municipality, the Garden Route
Film Commission and other key organisations.
This is being done as the industry brings a welcome boost to the area's economy. In 2021 when a film crew started filming an international reality series in Plett, the economic contribution of that single project was in excess of R18,4m with no less than 4 800 bed nights booked and more than 20 other local businesses benefitting from sales and services.
Experts say it is the area's untouched natural beauty and the "film-friendly" attitude of locals and authorities that make Plettenberg Bay a popular choice.
