Club cricket back in full swing
REGIONAL - Club cricket is officially back and in full swing, with every league under SWD Cricket played last weekend for the first time this season. While the majority of the leagues had already started, it was the opening weekend for the SWD Premier League where Plett Pioneers lost and Knysna Cavaliers won in their respective season openers. Almost every club cricket team in Knysna and Plettenberg Bay was in action this weekend.
Knysna Cavaliers had all three men’s teams playing as well as their women’s team; all three Plett Pioneers’ men’s teams played; Kranshoek Cobras’ second men’s team and women’s team played; and Pirates United’s two men’s teams were in action too. It was only Pioneers’ women’s team and Cobras’ first team who did not feature in fixtures this weekend.
It was a contrasting start to the season for Knysna and Plett’s two Premier League clubs. Cavaliers won their match against Harlequins Forces by five wickets away at the Military Sports Ground in Oudtshoorn. Pioneers meanwhile lost their clash against Union
Stars 1 at home at the Ashford Cricket Oval by 42 runs. In the Promotion League, Pirates triumphed over Bongolethu by 168 runs. In Reserve League Division 1, Cobras’ first team received match points after their opponents (Kwanonqaba) forfeited.
