Famsa offers support

- Zoë Fick

KNYSNA - Famsa Knysna is dedicated to addressing abuse, gender-based violence (GBV) and femicide during the 16 Days of Activism campaign from 25 November to 10 December. The organisation is drawing attention to how serious GBV is, and reminds the public that it occurs year-round, not just at this time of year.

Famsa focuses on helping victims of all forms of abuse, including women, children, men, the elderly, disabled individuals, and LGBTQI+ community members. The organisation also provides widespread support through therapeutic intervention and assistance to those who have experienced crime or violence. Famsa Knysna has two dedicated staff members who offer therapeutic intervention to victims of crime and violence. Individuals can reach out to the Knysna or Plettenberg Bay offices for assistance – 044 382 5129 (Knysna), 044 533 0515 (Plett). A 24/7 WhatsApp hotline staffed by social workers is also available for those experiencing gender-based violence – 072 847 0322 (Knysna), 079 640 6883 (Plett). Famsa works closely with the police, the Department of Health and armed response units to ensure victims receive necessary follow-up therapeutic services.

They also offer various programmes and services to support victims of crime, abuse and domestic violence, including training programmes, workshops and counselling sessions. Genderbased violence education workshops and men's programmes address issues surrounding abuse and provide parenting programmes that help parents explore alternatives to corporal punishment and violent parenting.
