Rage finds its 2023 home

- Chris van Gass

PLETTENBERG BAY - The hills around Jakkalsvlei near Kranshoek are again expected to come alive to the sound of the annual Plett Rage.

This follows approval from the Bitou land use planning tribunal on 9 November giving the organisers permission for a temporary departure for the Rage to be held on the Jakkalskraal Boerdery property. It will be the second year running that it takes place at the same venue.

The Rage is set to take place on 2, 4, 6 and 7 December and the Plett Season event on 31 December.

Among the measures the municipality has introduced is to appoint a compliance control officer (CCO) to audit and enforce every aspect of the event from setting up to breakdown.

The CCO will have the authority, along with municipal law enforcement, to halt the event at any stage should there be a breakdown in compliance.

The municipality has applied strict conditions that address aspects such as lighting, traffic control, sound levels and a pre-approved evacuation plan.

There is a variety of other stipulations that include a limit on the site size; a traffic management plan; a condition that flood lighting will not shine

into nearby houses or into the road; that sufficient repairs must be made to the Robberg Extension Road; and that the sound level must be reduced from 01:00 before being switched off completely by 02:00.

The event organiser, Lucky Fish Events, will be liable for any cost incurred for rendering any municipal services for the duration of the event, as agreed to by the relevant department/s and in accordance with the approved municipal fees or tariffs.

Lucky Fish will also have to indemnify Bitou Municipality against any legal action taken against the municipality, and the necessary agreement must be signed before the event takes place.

A memorandum of agreement has to be entered into after the approval by the municipal events committee and an offsite contact centre must be made available near the Airport/ Jakkalskraal turn-off.

Chris Schliemann, Bitou's manager of land use management, said in correspondence that there is a right to appeal the decision.

"Such an appeal must be submitted in writing to the Municipal Manager, Bitou Municipality, Private Bag X1002, Plettenberg Bay, 6600 or electronically to the case officer (cschliemann@plett.gov.za).

“A notification will confirm the coming into operation of the approval, if no appeals are received within 21 days of this letter being sent by e–mail," Schliemann said.
