De Kock bows out on a high

- Blake Linder

KNYSNA - Quinton de Kock has officially called an end to his One Day International (ODI) career, and is bowing out in some of the finest form of his career. With four centuries and the third-most runs at this year's ICC Cricket World Cup, De Kock was named in the team of the tournament.

The 30-year-old's performances for the Proteas at the 2023 World Cup had South African fans reminiscing on years gone by as we witnessed the very best of De Kock, who resides in Knysna when not away on cricket duty. His exploits with the bat saw him rack up 594 runs across 10 innings.

He notched up four centuries, the joint second-most by any player at a single World Cup.

But, the records don't stop there. His total of 594 runs is the themost most by a South African at a World Cup, and his score of 174 against Bangladesh is the second-highest by a South African at a World Cup and the third-highest score at this year's tournament. It is also his second-highest score across his

entire ODI career.

De Kock's World Cup runscoring took his total for the year up to 937, the second-most he's scored in a calendar year (after 2017). The centuries he scored means he has four for the year, the joint-most he's scored in a year (tied with his debut year in 2013).

De Kock has also hit 131 boundaries (101 fours, 30 sixes) in 2023, the most he's racked up in one year.

What's all the more impressive is that De Koc Kock shone with the gloves too, putting in a number of very special performances perfo behind the stumps for the t Proteas.

He notched notche up 20 dismissals (19 catches, one stumping) at this year's World Cup, more than any of the other wicketkeepers at the tournament tournament.

He now has ha 37 ODI dismissals (32 catches, five stumpings) for the year, makin making it his most prolific calendar ye year with the gloves for the Proteas.

All of the above statistics just go to show tha that De Kock has arguably bowed out o of the ODI format at the peak of his powers, having served as a staple of the South African top order for the past decade.

He will un undoubtedly be missed in the side, but b fans will eagerly await the chance ch to see him at his blistering best be in Protea colours in the T20I for format.
