Murray High most improved in maths

- Yolande Stander

PLETTENBERG BAY - Murray High School in Plettenberg Bay proved that hard work pays off when it was honoured with an award for the Western Cape school that has shown the biggest improvement in mathematics.

The school, in Kwanokuthula in Plett, received the award at the province's 2023 National Senior Certificate Awards ceremony at Leeuwenhof in Cape Town recently.

The award went to the one school in the province that obtained the highest score when combining the change in percentage of candidates in the cohort taking the subject, the change in the pass rate for the subject, the change in the subject average and the change in the number of candidates taking the subject. A minimum enrolment of 30 candidates was also required.

Over and above the improvement in mathematics, the school saw a great improvement in its overall matric results for the Class of 2023. In 2022 the school obtained a pass rate of 79,6% and last year it secured 89,7%.

During his speech at the awards ceremony, Western Cape Education MEC David Maynier not only congratulated Murray High with its achievement, but also lauded it for overcoming what has been dubbed a tough year for matrics who faced a myriad of issues, from severe load shedding to floods and other disasters.

He said despite this, the Western Cape Class of 2023 increased the matric pass rate for the third year running, to 81,54%.

"Every single one our 50 520 candidates who passed met the requirements to access higher education, with 26 182 candidates (or 42,2%) qualifying with a bachelor pass to attend university, our highest number of bachelor passes ever," Maynier said. He added that the province’s candidates also achieved the top mathematics pass rate at 75,4% and the top physical sciences pass rate at 82,2%. "These are critical subjects for the national and provincial economy, so we are pleased to see improvements in both compared to 2022."
