Cavaliers back to winning ways

-

KNYSNA - Knysna Cavaliers returned to winning ways last weekend with a tight, ht, hard-fought victory over Mossel Bay at Van Riebeeck Stadium. This while Plett Pioneers' match against George was abandoned and Pirates United lost to New Dawn Park.

As club cricket in SWD starts to reach the tail-end of the season, more and more leagues are drawing to a close. Reserve League Division 1 wrapped up last weekend, and the Promotion League will finish this weekend. This leaves only the Premier League and the Women's League Division 1 still in competition this season.

Pirates finished their season last weekend with the defeat to New Dawn Park at Loerie Park in Knysna.

The home side was bowled out for 61, with the visitors subsequently securing a sevenwicket win.

Pioneers were due to continue their Premier League season, but due to water leaking under the covers at Rooirivierrif in George, their match against George was abandoned without any play. They've also been slapped with a three-point deduction for a slow overrate and now lie bottom of the league, one point behind Mossel Bay.

Mossel Bay in turn welcomed Knysna Cavaliers to Van Riebeeck Stadium on Saturday 10 February, for a match that was reduced to 30 overs because of rain and a wet outfield. The home team batted first, scoring 133 with JP Ellis taking three wickets for Cavaliers, with Blake Linder and Francois Bonthuys contributing with two wickets each.

Bonthuys (51 not out) and Cavaliers captain Hayden Sweet (32) then led a tense run chase with valuable run contributions.

Cavaliers secured the win in the final over, making it over the line by two wickets. They lie fourth on the log, one point behind Union Stars 2, who they will face at Loerie Park this weekend.
