- Zama Gagu

PLETTENBERG BAY - Plett outfit Oriented Birds Football Club spread their wings away from home when they crippled Batalions FC with a score of 4-1 in a Western Cape ABC Motsepe Provincial League fixture on Saturday afternoon, 10 February at Mbekweni Stadium in Paarl.

The Plett side's goals were netted by Siyanda Madlala, Amimu Hussein and Menzi Gwala, who scored a brace. The battling Cape Winelands Region team Batalions are currently fighting for survival in Stream B, sitting right at the bottom of the log.

The Birds have so far played seven league fixtures with two victories, one draw and four defeats, having seven points after last weekend's results.

The game started at a fast pace with Oriented Birds pushing for a positive start. The Birds players were looking very sharp on the ball, controlling the game. Siyanda Madlala of Oriented Birds netted the opening goal to make it 1-0 after excellent work from the centre of the field.

Batalion players were battling, trying to defend the ensuing attacking play from OB's flanks.

Menzi Gwala of Oriented Birds netted the second goal to make it 2-0, doubling his side's lead just before the half-time whistle.

Batalions tried to come back into the game, but it was not easy for them to break through the stubborn

Oriented Birds defence.

When the whistle blew for the end of the first half, the score was 2-0.

The second half continued at the same fast pace as the end of the first, with both teams looking for goals. Oriented

Birds looked very smart on the ball and they managed to hit the back of the net twice in the second half, while the wounded home team Batalions

FC scored only once in the second half.

The exciting game ended 4-1 with the Birds collecting maximum points away from home.

Lying in wait for them now is another difficult test away from home against former Western Cape ABC Motsepe Provincial League champions Zizwe United FC on Friday evening, 16 February at Nyanga Stadium in Cape Town.
