Sea Cadets honoured for bravery
KNYSNA - A ceremony was held recently to recognise Ensign Eastern Hennies and Staff Instructor Naigel Keswarts, for their exceptional bravery and service to the ideals of the South African Sea Cadets.
Both received the South African Sea Cadets Meritorious Medal on 2 March at the TS Knysna Sea Cadets base, where they were hailed for their heroic actions in extinguishing a fire on the newly built yacht, Caritas, at the Knysna Waterfront
Hennies and Keswarts' bravery and exemplary conduct make them a credit to the Sea Cadet Corps and serve as role models for the community.
"Their achievements reflect their unwavering commitment to the values and mission of the South African Sea Cadets, and they are deserving recipients of this esteemed recognition," said Steve Eriksen, former commander of TS Knysna.
The electrical fire broke out on the catamaran on 14 August 2023, posing a
significant risk to nearby vessels. Upon receiving an SOS, Hennies and Keswarts immediately responded to the scene. With their Sea Cadet training and quick thinking, they promptly took action, using firefighting equipment to contain the fire in the yacht's cabin and preventing its spread.
Their expertise in yachts and boats proved invaluable as they assisted the Knysna Fire Brigade in identifying and neutralising potential risks, ensuring the safety y of surrounding vessels. ls. The bravery and dedication of Ensign Eastern Hennies and Staff Instructor Naigel Keswarts make them true heroes in the Knysna community and will ill continue to inspire others as s an example of the values upheld by the Sea Cadet Corps.
