Joint government visit

- Zoë Fick

KNYSNA - The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS), in partnership with the Western Cape Provincial Government and the Breede-Olifants Catchment Management Agency, conducted a two-day joint working visit to Knysna on earlier this month to address the persistent water supply and service delivery issues faced by Knysna Municipality.

A comprehensive assessment was made of the water and sanitation infrastructure and an anti-vandalism awareness campaign was launched during technical site inspections in the Hornlee and Dam se Bos areas.

These locations have been significantly affected by water shortages and sewage spills and there is a dire need to implement sustainable solutions.

During the visit to the Hornlee Community Hall, stakeholders got the opportunity to discuss and address pressing issues.

A second meeting was held at the Chris Hani Hall in Dam se Bos. The purpose of this meeting was to assess the key areas of intervention during the site visit and to receive community feedback.

Anti-vandalism campaign implemented

In response to the high levels of vandalism in the area that impact the working infrastructure, an antivandalism campaign was implemented. The campaign is an ongoing initiative which will include the community's active assistance in reporting vandalism through the necessary channels.

As one resident of Dam se Bos stated during the community engagement session, "We know how badly the vandalism affects us because we are the ones going without water or electricity when it happens. The community knows who the culprits are that commit vandalism and together we can raise attention to this issue."

Vandalism is a major concern in Knysna, particularly in the northern areas like Hornlee and Dam se Bos.

By highlighting the consequences of vandalism, such as disrupted water supply, increased repair costs, and compromised service delivery, the campaign seeks to create a sense of responsibility and ownership in the community. Residents will be encouraged to protect and preserve the infrastructure that is vital for the wellbeing and quality of life in the area.
