Bitou celebrates SA Library Week
PLETTENBERG BAY - Bitou celebrated South African Library week over the past week with a range of activities to encourage the youth to discover the value of reading.
The Library and Information Association of South Africa (Liasa), in partnership with the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, celebrated Library Week across the country between 18 and 24 March this year under the theme “Libraries Foster Social Cohesion”.
According to Liasa the theme underscores the role libraries play in uniting communities, as they serve as hubs where people from diverse backgrounds can come together to exchange ideas, and to learn and engage in cultural and intellectual activities. “By providing access to information, technology, resources and programmes, libraries broaden horizons, connect individuals, and foster a shared sense of purpose and identity. They also provide safe spaces for marginalised communities to address social and development issues, share experiences and thus promote social cohesion,” the organisation said.
In Bitou, celebrations were held at the Kurland Community Hall. Among the guests was Deputy Mayor Nokuzola Kolwapi. “I want you to read, because reading is how you become wise,” Kolwapi said.
During her address, she challenged local
youngsters to read at least one book per month.
As part of the celebrations Bitou peace officers showed off their skills, local dancers performed, musicians entertained the crowds and various other activities were on the programme.
As part of the celebration of South African Library Week, South Africans were encouraged to visit libraries and learn about how libraries stimulate social cohesion by fostering inclusivity.
