Joining forces to dismantle stigma surrounding TB

- Zoë Fick

- Noleen Dirkse, community activist, has taken up the task of championing a TB Awareness campaign, with the support of Green Pastures Funeral Home. From Monday to Wednesday, 18 to 20 March, the duo worked diligently to raise awareness about tuberculosis and provide much-needed community support to those affected by the disease.

Dirkse is no stranger to the challenges posed by tuberculosis, having personally battled and overcome the disease an astonishing ten times. Her own experiences have fuelled her passion to spread awareness and extend a helping hand to individuals facing this formidable health condition.

The campaign holds great significance as it coincides with World TB Awareness Day on 24 March. Dirkse's mission goes far beyond the symbolism of this global event. She aims to dismantle the stigma associated with TB and shed light on the realities faced by those living with the disease. By doing so, she hopes to foster a greater sense of understanding and compassion in the broader community.

"We want to make the community aware of the realities of what it's like to live with TB, the effects that this disease has on the families in the community. My partnership with Green Pastures Funeral Home is that of a family working together to help the greater community,'" she says.

Through a series of awareness programmes, Dirkse and the dedicated team at Green Pastures provide the public with realistic insights into the challenges of living with TB. They aim to emphasise the profound impact the disease has on individuals, families, and communities as a whole. By sharing personal stories, distributing accurate information, and creating an open dialogue, the campaign aims to break down barriers and promote a culture of support and inclusivity.

Recognising the importance of community engagement and collective action, Green Pastures Funeral Home supported Dirkse's campaign by providing resources, logistical support and a platform for spreading awareness. The partnership reflects a shared commitment to making a positive impact on the lives of individuals and families affected by tuberculosis.
