Electrification of informal houses brings power to the people

- Zoë Fick

- Knysna is set to witness a significant transformation as the electrification of informal settlements gains momentum.

Municipal Manager Ombali Sebola recently announced that substantial progress has been made with the process, thanks to a conditional grant of R40m from the Integrated National Electrification Program (Inep).

The grant aims to enhance the living conditions of residents in informal settlements by providing essential services.

Recognising that access to electricity is a fundamental aspect of improving living conditions, Sebola expressed enthusiasm about the developments. Following rigorous tender processes, three construction contractors have been appointed for the project. Project sites have already been established in specific locations, and construction is underway in some areas.

Thanks to the funding, a considerable number of connections will be made in various wards across Knysna. In Ward 4, Phelandaba will have 185 connections, Nkandla 180, New Rest 150, Robololo 175, and Qolweni 40 connections. Ward 6 will witness Wing Street receiving six connections, Stroebel Street 18, and Happy Valley 22 connections. In Ward 7, Katanga is allocated 170 connections, Kanonkop 130, Dinangwe 180, and Edameni 190 connections. Ward 8 will see Sakhimvana having 50 connections, Riverside 150, Masakhane 150, Lingelihle 150, and Back

of Thembelitsha 150 connections. Lastly, in Ward 11, June Valley will receive 14 connections, Lower Pezula 36, and Bigai Heights 43 connections.

Sebola emphasised the importance of ongoing feedback, continuous communication and engagement with affected residents through their ward councillors.

The municipality is committed to ensuring transparency and community involvement throughout the electrification project. The goal is to provide more households with

access to electricity, thereby improving service delivery to all residents of Knysna.

The electrification of informal houses brings hope and opportunities to the people of Knysna. Access to electricity will not only enhance the day-to-day lives of individuals and families but also open doors to economic empowerment and improved educational prospects. It will enable residents to engage in activities that were previously hindered by the absence of power, such as studying, running businesses, and utilising modern appliances.

Sebola said; "Furthermore, the electrification project showcases the municipality's dedication to addressing the needs of its citizens and creating an inclusive and equitable community. By prioritising the provision of essential services, Knysna is taking significant strides toward uplifting informal settlements and ensuring that all residents have access to basic amenities."

As the construction progresses and connections are made, the impact of this electrification initiative will be felt throughout Knysna.
