Knysna Lions celebrates 50 years’ selfless service

- Zoë Fick

The Knysna Lions Club recently reached a significant milestone as it celebrated 50 years of selfless service. Over the past half-century, the Lions have not only provided assistance to those in need but have also created a vibrant atmosphere of camaraderie, community and enjoyment. From hosting unique events to supporting various charitable initiatives, the Knysna Lions have left an indelible mark on their community.

Throughout their history, the Knysna Lions have never shied away from having fun with their service efforts. One memorable event was the "Anything that Floats" regatta, which saw both children and adults boarding unconventional floating devices. The Lions also organised dinner dances, bowls days, and golf days to raise funds for charitable causes.

The Lions of Knysna have been at the forefront of supporting various charities and addressing essential community needs.

The Knysna Lions have played a crucial role in promoting health and well-being in their community. For 36 years, they have organised water points for the Forest Marathon. They collaborated with Lions International to supply Knysna with a burn unit, a mobile emergency clinic that provides critical medical assistance during fires and emergencies. They also organised special events for diabetic children, offering them the opportunity to connect with others facing similar challenges and enjoy lagoon cruises.

The Lions of Knysna have been at the forefront of supporting various charities and addressing essential community needs. They have donated tools and equipment to the furniture project for the local Epilepsy branch, and the proceeds of the annual cycling event they organise have been dedicated to sight projects, enabling thousands of patients to receive vital eye care such as spectacles and cataract operations.

Their collaboration with the SA Guide Dog Association has provided invaluable support to individuals with visual impairments, granting them greater independence and mobility.

The impact of the Knysna Lions' dedication and service over the past 50 years cannot be overstated. They have fed the hungry, supplied medical equipment, and assisted those who require specialised care. The establishment of an eye clinic, provision of sight testing, and the distribution of spectacles have significantly improved the vision and quality of life for countless individuals. Throughout challenges such as the Covid-19 pandemic and inclement weather, the Lions' commitment to their community remains unwavering.

Reflecting on 50 years of remarkable achievements, it is clear that they have made an immeasurable impact over the years. Their commitment to service, coupled with a spirit of fun and camaraderie, has created a legacy that will continue to inspire future generations.
