PLETTENBERG BAY - Gymnastics star Leolin Petersen is officialy the best in South Africa after being crowned the senior female trampolinist of the year at Gymnastics South Africa's annual award ceremony over the weekend.

The ceremony was held at the Matsport Centre in Centurion, Gauteng on 23 March and is an annual event to celebrate gymnasts who have excelled in their disciplines during the previous year.

The 17-year-old Plett Primary School alumnus definitely excelled in all the disciplines she participated in in 2023 and even made it into the South African team at the Gymnastics Federation (FIG) World Championship in the UK in November last year. This is known to be one of the most prestigious events in gymnastics. It was held in Birmingham in November and Leolin not only competed in the junior category, but was also a member of the senior South African team.

And it seems that the world is her oyster as she continued last year's momentum into this year by winning triple gold at the Trampoline Gymnastics SA Cup 2024 at the Fairview Sport Centre in Gqeberha recently. She put on a great performance that saw her securing first place in L9 Tumbling, L10 Euro trampoline and L11 double mini trampoline.

She also participated at the trials held at Mandy’s School of Tumbling and Trampoline for the selection of the junior and senior team to go to the African Championships in Tunisia later this year.

Leolin is still awaiting the results, but hopes to make her way to this prestigious event.

Leolin is currently attending Framesby High School in Gqeberha to be closer to her coaches at Mandy's School of Tumbling and Trampoline.
