Oyster Festival countdown

- Zoë Fick

- The countdown has begun for the highly anticipated 2024 Knysna Oyster Festival, set to take place from 21 to 30 June.

With 41 years of success under its belt, this year's festival promises to be a memorable celebration of gastronomy, sports, culture, and community.

Municipal Manager Ombali Sebola has expressed his enthusiasm, stating that planning is well underway.

Visit Knysna, in partnership with the Greater Knysna Business Chambers, transport operators, Decas, and event organisers are working diligently to ensure a seamless and enjoyable experience. The festival's anchor events, the Knysna Cycle Tour and the 39th Knysna Forest Marathon, have already opened their entries and are receiving a positive response.

Numerous meetings with stakeholders and the dedicated steering committee have taken place, paving the way for a diverse line-up of over 75 events.

The deadline for event submissions to be included in the official printed programme is 15 April.

Submissions received after this date will still be considered for the online programme on the official festival website.

Exciting plans are in motion to establish a Festival Hub at the High School Sports field in town, which will serve as the central venue for various activities, including the registration and finish for both the Knysna Forest Marathon and the Knysna Cycle Race. Local small, medium, and micro enterprises (SMMEs) have until 18 April to apply for the opportunity to showcase and sell their unique products at the

Festival Hub.

In addition to the anchor events, the greater Knysna area will come alive with a wide range of happenings.

From the Eden Classic Car Show to the Simola Sunset Wine Run, golf tournaments, the Knysna Wine Festival, soccer, rugby, and chess tournaments, there will be something to captivate every interest.

Sebola said the festival will offer a diverse selection of events that cater to a variety of audiences. Arts and culture enthusiasts can look forward to highlights such as the Kasi Music Festival, the Knysna Art Walkabout, potjiekos competition, and live entertainment at local restaurants.

The much-loved Oyster Hotspots will be back this year, tantalising taste buds with their delectable offerings. Festival organisers are working closely with the Knysna Sea Cadets to bring back the presence of the SA Navy to Knysna during the festival, while engaging with the police to participate in community events.

The success of the annual Knysna Oyster Festival relies on the collective efforts of all stakeholders. Seeking sponsorships is a crucial part of sustaining and growing the festival, as their financial contributions directly impact the local economy.

The organisers extend their gratitude to all those involved in the preparations and emphasise that they anticipate a triumphant 2024 Knysna Oyster Festival.
