Music legends bringing a performance to Knysna

KNYSNA - Knysna will be getting a visit from a special band that has played to 100 000 fans at Concert in the Park, London.

e'Void will give a live show at the venue 34 Waenhout, Knysna Industria on Saturday 13 April.

Their voices and melodies are more than music to South African fans.

Their flamboyant stage presence became the symbol of a generation rebelling against a war they didn't want to fight.

Cast yourself back to the early 80s.

It was the time of PW Botha, the fingerwagging Groot Krokodil and his prolonged State of Emergency, economic sanctions, the cultural boycott, Artists Against Apartheid, End Conscription Campaign, and impassioned pleas to the world. The moods out on the street and in the parks, clubs, shebeens, factories and mines were frequently sombre, ominous and disconcerting.

Into this time of turmoil burst the Windrich brothers, Lucien and Erik, calling themselves éVoid and packing the young and rebellious music and dance enthusiasts into smoky clubs like the Chelsea Hotel in Catherine Street, Club DV8 and The Venue at Dawson Hotel in the city centre.

Their collage of New Wave and hints of traditional African rhythms were utterly fresh and, combined with their irresistible visual magnetism, provided South African youngsters with the perfect outlet to blow off steam and rebel against the system.

They quickly rose to prominence with smash hits like Taximan, Shadows and Junk Jive and, on Saturday 12 January 1985, 'eVoid performed before an estimated 100 000 people at the Concert in the Park in support of Operation Hunger, cementing a permanent place in South African culture.

This month, the Garden Route welcomes back these legends, playing on a whistlestop tour with Josh Hawks and Peter Cohen, the rhythm section of South African legends Freshly Ground at the new 34 Waenhout tented venue in Knysna on Saturday 13 April, supported by local opening act Shaza.

They will also play at Moss and Maple in Plett on Sunday 14 April.

This show should not be missed by any warm-blooded South African. It is the ideal chance to beat the autumn chills with a warm pizza, cold beer and unforgettable dance vibes, and to introduce a younger generation to the music that made the children of the 70s aware that there was a whole wide world out there worth fighting for.

The Knysna show will offer standing room only. Doors open at 17:30 and the show starts at 19:00.
