Pedalling for preschoolers
Olebogeng Kgengwe, a dedicated cyclist from Knysna, is setting out on a 1 600km cycling journey across the Western Cape to make a difference in the lives of disadvantaged preschoolers. His mission is to raise funds and provide educational packs for underprivileged children in preschools across Knysna, Plettenberg Bay, Sedgefield and Rheenendal.
Starting from Knysna on 6 April, Kgengwe will navigate through challenging terrains, including Sutherland, the Cederberg, and Oudtshoorn, over the course of a week. The route involves an impressive 16 000 to 20 000 metres of vertical ascent.
Kgengwe's journey is driven by a heartfelt commitment to improving the lives of preschoolers. He has launched a crowdfunding campaign on BackaBuddy with a goal of raising R38 500. The funds will be used to provide educational packs for 550 children in 28 preschools across the disadvantaged areas of the Western Cape.
Each pack, costing R70, will contain activity booklets, play dough, pencils, books and crafting materials.
The proceeds from his campaign will support the preschool intervention programme run by Knysna Education Trust (Ket), which assists children who may be falling behind in developmental milestones, helping them catch up and prepare for Grade R.
Since the launch of his campaign, Kgengwe's efforts have received significant support.
With the generous contributions of 24 donors, he has already raised R26 700 towards his goal.
Kgengwe is no stranger to endurance challenges. As an avid athlete, he has completed three 1 000km Munga races and two 1 600km journeys from Johannesburg to Cape Town. Through his passion for cycling, he has found a way to give back to those in need.
