Don’t wash your whites
Knysna municipality has issued a 'white-wash' warning because of discolouration in its water supply.
In a statement to Knysna councillors on Wednesday 10 April, the municipality said while Knysna's water supply was still safe for consumption, it advised caution when doing the laundry, "especially with regards to white clothing, as the water may cause staining due to its altered colour".
The statement, forwarded by Ward 9 Councillor Sharon Sabbagh, said debris had obstructed the sieves at the weir following recent heavy rainfall, leaving only one pump operational at the Charlesford pump station.
"Divers will be deployed shortly to clear the sieves and restore full functionality," said the statement, adding that in addition, a break in the Akkerkloof pipeline has been identified.
"This unforeseen development exacerbates the current water situation. Our team is actively addressing this challenge alongside the efforts to clear the sieves," said the statement.
In an update issued on Thursday 11 April, the municipality said due to the recent heavy rainfall, they are experiencing fluctuations in the colour of our raw water supply.
Its team was monitoring and adjusting chemical dosing to maintain water quality standards.
"Kindly note that the final potable water colour may be affected by these challenges. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding while we work to address this issue."
Until advised otherwise, residents should expect discoloured water - and be careful of washing white clothes.
