Tawana gets treatment for

KNYSNA - The community of Knysna has come together to support Tawana Jonam, a 14-year-old student at Garden Route Models.

Tawana joined Garden Route Models last October. Those who know the aspiring young model say that she is a kind-hearted young lady, a bit introverte­d, very humble with a heart of gold.

Tawana recently suffered severe burns in a tragic accident. Thanks to the generosity of local donors, Tawana has been able to receive the necessary y burn care and start her journey to recovery. ery.

The incident happened ened on Sunday 31 March h when Tawana was given the task of moving a pot of boiling water from one gas stove to another. She then accidental­ly burned her hands and, as a reflex action, dropped ed the pot, causing the scalding water to spill ill on her lower body. The consequenc­es of this accident were devastatin­g, leaving Tawana with severe level 2 and 3 burns and in urgent need of specialise­d medical attention.

“I wasn't with them when this happened but I can just imagine what pain and heartache Tawana and her mom Naume had to go through. Naume sent me a WhatsApp on Tuesday morning to inform me of this happening.” says Charmaine Kruger, Tawana’s modeling coach.

News of Tawana's traumatic accident quickly spread throughout the community, prompting an outpouring of support from the kind-hearted residents of Knysna. Recognizin­g the urgent need for proper burn care, a group of generous donors stepped forward to offer their financial assistance.

The support towards Tawana’s burn care was made possible with the help of Charmaine Kruger, of Garden Route Models. Charmaine made it her mission to reach out to the broader Knysna community on social media in order to get Tawana the proper medical care she needed.

“I was devastated when I heard and saw the severe burns of this young little teenage girl. I discussed this with my family and friends and asked for advice. That’s when I got the idea to go to social media with it.” says Kruger.

Through their selfless contributi­ons, the community was able to sponsor Tawana's medical treatment to the value of R4500 and provide her with the necessary care to alleviate her pain and aid her recovery.

Thanks to the collective efforts of the community, Tawana was able to receive immediate medical attention from skilled profession­als who are well-versed in burnwound care.

Despite her ordeal, Tawana remains hopeful and positive. The young girl is looking forward to returning to school and is even considerin­g entering the upcoming Miss Pearl Pageant at this year’s Oyster Festival.
