We live in others’ holiday destination

- Linda Jane Walls from Knysna writes:

One of the wonderful aspects of being invited into people's homes on a daily basis is that over the last 15 years I have met and experienced a range of people coming and going from our area. The reasons have changed as much as Knysna has through the years - from a sleepy holiday destination filled with second homes to a mecca for semigration and a favourite temperate respite for our European swallows.

Every day I am welcomed in and invariably the tales are shared of why they chose our estuarine shores. Most stories are hope-filled and driven by the pursuit of a simple, more wholesome life. Our quality of life and sense of community is something that always stands out and possibly what we take most for granted. Sometimes the stories are sad. Packing up homes of family members passed or bruised dreams stacked neatly in brown boxes. They all are sad to leave but are grateful for the time they or their family got to spend in Knysna as if it was soothing for their souls.

The main thread though is that they all come in search of a better quality of life as did so many of us through the years.

Climate, schooling, nature and a slower pace of life. These are a few reasons that are mentioned, yet each list of 'why Knysna?' is unique to each client and their family.

Ultimately, I get to experience the enthusiasm of new beginnings and see our town through their fresh, excited eyes after each of my visits to their homes.

In short, we should fully appreciate that we really do live in other people's holiday destination.
