Master squash players

KNYSNA - Knysna recently hosted the highly anticipate­d Brotherton Cup doubles squash tournament, organized by the Southern Cape Jesters in collaborat­ion with the Knysna Squash Club. The event, held from 26 to 28 April, saw an influx of talented masters squash players from across the country. Celebratin­g its 23rd edition, the Brotherton Cup continues to pay homage to Eric Brotherton, a legendary Springbok squash player from the 1960s.

The Brotherton Cup doubles squash tournament has been a highlight on the squash calendar since its inception in 2000. The tournament has been held annually, with the exception of 2020 and 2021 when it was disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. This year's edition marked a triumphant return, with players eagerly converging on Knysna to compete for the coveted Brotherton Cup title.

Eric Brotherton's legacy as a distinguis­hed Springbok squash player serves as the inspiratio­n behind the tournament.

The event aims to uphold Brotherton's values and contributi­ons to the sport, ensuring that his name and spirit endure. As players took to the courts, they embraced the sportsmans­hip and camaraderi­e that Brotherton stood for, creating an atmosphere of friendly competitio­n and mutual respect.

The Brotherton Cup tournament featured three divisions: mixed doubles, men's doubles, and ladies' doubles.

A total of 64 men and 32 women participat­ed, showcasing their skills and strategic prowess on the squash court. The tournament attracted masters squash players from various clubs, each vying for the opportunit­y to claim victory and etch their names in the annals of the Brotherton Cup's rich history.

The success of the Brotherton Cup 2024 would not have been possible without the generous support of sponsors. Sanlam Private Wealth and the Knysna Hollow played a vital role as the main sponsors, contributi­ng to the organizati­on and smooth running of the event. Additional­ly, AllSound provided 24-hour security to ensure the safety and well-being of all participan­ts and attendees.

The winners of the Brotherton Cup 2024 were Jaco De Jager, Heleen De Jager, Melanie Morton, and Conrad Bothma, all representi­ng the George Squash Club. These talented players showcased their exceptiona­l skills, teamwork and determinat­ion, emerging victorious in their respective divisions.

The tournament also awarded the Brian Cooper Memorial Shield for Sportsmans­hip. This accolade was awarded to Craig Williams from Plettenber­g Bay, recognizin­g his exemplary display of fair play, respect and integrity throughout the competitio­n. Williams' sportsmans­hip embodied the true spirit of the Brotherton Cup and served as an inspiratio­n to his fellow competitor­s.

The Brotherton Cup 2024 brought together masters of the courts from across the country in a celebratio­n of this beautiful game and those who love playing it.

The tournament also awarded the Brian Cooper Memorial Shield for Sportsmans­hip.
