WHY WOMEN SHOULD LIFT HEAVY WEIGHTS
WHEN YOU UNDERSTAND THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF HEAVY LIFTING, YOU’LL NEVER SKIP THE WEIGHTS SECTION AT THE GYM AGAIN.
It’s great for your bones and accelerates weight loss
Ladies, it’s time to put those 2kg dumbbells away. They will not help you achieve the lean, toned, ‘fit’ look you’re after. If you want a curvy butt and shapely arms you need to lift and squat with heavier weights than that. Bottom line (literally): if you want to change your body shape you need to step away from the treadmill or spin bike and pick up a barbell instead. You’ll be amazed at how quickly you’ll see results!
Many women are afraid they’ll bulk up with weights, but it’s highly unlikely: we just don’t have enough testosterone for that – it takes tremendous time, effort and extreme nutritional input for female bodybuilders to look the way they do. What you will get is muscle definition, and you’ll get stronger, too. Looking good naked is awesome, but being strong feels even better... being able to do something that seemed impossible a few short weeks ago is a real confidence booster. Doing things for yourself rather than relying on others to lift, hold or carry for you is very empowering, too. And, if you’re a runner, first strengthening the muscles supporting your joints will help prevent injuries.
Building muscle is critical to your wellbeing: did you know that one of the major causes of lower back pain is weak glutes? And many elderly people become bedridden or struggle to get out of a chair simply because their muscles have wasted away. If maintaining quality of life for as long as possible is your goal, it’s time to start treating your muscle mass like the precious thing it is. Look after what you have and do what you can to acquire more. Use it – or lose it!
