In Lefa La Ntate, Mohau Modisakeng continues his ongoing “archaeolog­ical approach to engaging the many layers of history”, bringing together large-scale photograph­ic prints, film and installati­on. Details: The show runs until July 8 at the Standard Bank Gallery, corner Simmonds and Frederick streets, Johannesbu­rg. The gallery will be open until 9pm for First Thursday on July 6.

This is Gallery MOMO’s third annual video exhibition. The group show features internatio­nal and local artists “engaging with history and memory through the medium of film and video”. Artists featured include Lucia Nhamo (Zimbabwe), Carla Inez Espost (South Africa), Rehema Chachage (Tanzania) and Francois Knoetze (South Africa), as well as a collaborat­ion between Martin Wilson (South Africa) and Kyu Sang Lee (South Korea). London-based artist Jennifer Morrison has created a series of abstract paintings that are primarily concerned with colour, scale, texture and form. With Trajectory, she is interested in weighing accident, playfulnes­s and abandon against deliberati­on, precision and control. Details: KZNSA Gallery, 166 Bulwer Road, Durban. The exhibition runs until July 2.

As one part of this five-day programme, which kicked off on June 21, Basha Uhuru’s Sounds of Freedom free concert will feature more than 30 acts, among them Zola, Stogie T, Thandiswa Mazwai, Sjava, Kly, Ms Cosmo, Urban Village, Johnny Cradle, Melo B Jones, Bye Beneco, Mpho Sebina, BCUC, Gigi Lamayne and Dope Saint Jude. This year’s festival, running from June 29 to July 9, will feature specially commission­ed work from last year’s Young Artist winners such as Benjamin Jephta (jazz), Dineo Seshee Bopape (performanc­e art), Thandazile Hadebe (dance), Vice Motshabi (theatre), Abel Selaocoe (music) and Beth Diane Armstrong (visual arts).

This year’s featured artist, Neo Muyanga, will present several works, among them Solid(T)ary, an invitation to reconsider the role and evolution of struggle songs.
