This payoff took place during his presidential campaign and is illegal in the US. Cohen, who has been co-operating with the special counsel’s investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election that brought Trump to power, had previously admitted lying to Congress to protect him. In his opening statement, Cohen said of the president: “He is a racist. He is a conman. He is a cheat.” He said the president knew about the planned Wikileaks dump of emails stolen from his opponent in the presidential race, Hillary Clinton, and was aware of a meeting between his son and a Russian lawyer offering “dirt” on Clinton, which took place during the campaign. A Republican representative in Congress said the Cohen hearing was “a circus that was full of lies and uncorroborated allegations”. Tee hee.
