Queue two: Royal baby Archie

Harry and Meghan, the duke and duchess of Cambridge, will be travelling to South Africa later this year. The British high commissioner to South Africa, Nigel Casey, made the announcement at an event in Pretoria to celebrate the 93rd birthday of Queen Elizabeth II, who is Prince Harry’s grandmother. The commissioner said the couple were expected in Southern Africa in “the autumn”, meaning springtime in Southern Africa. Prince Harry is expected to do some work for Sentebale, the charity for children and young people affected by HIV that he founded with Prince Seeiso of Lesotho. In the second week of June, Britain’s Daily Mail reported that the Cambridges were still “nesting” at their home, Frogmore Cottage, in Berkshire with their new child, Archie, who was born on May 6. Start queuing now if you want to see the royal baby when the family disembarks.

Diplomatic end for Zindzi Mandela

“Interesting.” That was the sole response of Zindzi Mandela-hlongwane, Nelson Mandela’s daughter and South Africa’s ambassador to Denmark, to former president Thabo Mbeki’s comments on her statements, made a few weeks ago, about white people being “shivering land thieves”. Mbeki told the Sunday Times: “There’s no ambassador who represents themselves and if Zindzi Mandela’s tweets are inconsistent with what the president is saying, then that cannot be allowed. The president, I know, has been very insistent on this, that land reform must be done on a constitutional and legal basis.”

The Economic Freedom Fighters defended Mandelahlongwane. International Affairs Minister Naledi Pandor said she expected ambassadors to be “diplomatic” and “focus on stating government policy”. The ambassador’s term ends at the end of June, so that’s right about now.
