Myanmar’s fatality list
It contains 179 names, and one unknown person, totalling 180. This is the fatality list, compiled by human rights group the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP), of all civilians who have been killed since the military coup in Myanmar on 1 February. And the list is still growing. The AAPP reported that since the beginning of March the degree of violence by the military has increased dramatically — with some of its own soldiers refusing to obey orders of violence and allegedly fleeing to neighbouring countries. Ever since the military overthrew the government and kidnapped democratically elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi, the country has been in turmoil. International and domestic activist groups’ pleas for stricter sanctions and action against the country were reiterated this week. They have yet to be heard.
