Go-ahead for Mkhwebane inquiry

-

While the spotlight is on public protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane’s fitness to hold office, the sideline events of such an important motion are worth noticing. Members of parliament have voted in favour of establishing a parliamentary inquiry to consider removing Mkhwebane from office for misconduct and incompetence. The voting on Tuesday highlighted the clear factions within the ANC when 275 MPS voted in favour of the inquiry and 40 MPS against it — and that’s before considering the necessary meetings prior to the vote, when the ANC’S top six met on the issue. The Economic Freedom Fighters’ only constant is change, as they consistently flip-flop their position on this issue without acknowledging their hypocrisy. In 2018 they considered Mkhwebane a spy, while this week scrutinising the process against the public protector as the “prosecution of a black woman”. Now they’re backing her. However, the Democratic Alliance got its way, and the inquiry into Mkhwebane will now start its lengthy process.
