A week in politics

-

It has been a week of good old politics in South Africa. With the ANC’S national general council coming up soon, local general elections around the corner, and the Zondo commission coming to an end, one did not expect anything less. Factions fight factions. Political parties fight each other. And then you get Zuma and Ace Magashule filling the few gaps with their own political narrative. Zuma had a tough week: firstly, the Supreme Court of Appeal dismissed his appeal against a high court ruling, which resulted in the former president having to cough up at least R15-million for legal fees. Then Zuma submitted a very emotive letter to Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng, after receiving a directive to answer two questions regarding his alleged contempt of court. Of course, he did not answer the questions, but did repeat that he is ready for possible imprisonment — “For the cause of constitutional rights, I will walk in jail as the first prisoner of the Constitutional Court.”
