Last-minute Zondo withdrawal
Not one week passes without drama at the state capture commission. This time it was former minister Malusi Gigaba’s estranged wife who delayed proceedings, by pulling a Zuma move in a noshow appearance. Norma Mngoma — who was unlawfully arrested on charges of malicious damage to property and assault after damaging one of Gigaba’s luxury cars — was set to testify on Tuesday, only to withdraw her testimony at the last minute. Her lawyer told the commission that because of “personal concerns with how various aspects regarding her proposed appearance at the commission [have] been handled or allegedly mishandled by the commission”, Mngoma will not appear before the commission. With the chessboard set, Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo moved by authorising a summons compelling Gigaba’s estranged wife to testify before the commission.
