The late Apple cofounder Steve Jobs’ youngest sprout,

Eve, made her runway debut when she walked at Paris Fashion

Week — a decade after her father died on 5 October 2011. Eve made her modelling debut in 2020 for the beauty brand Glossier. While her modelling career has just kicked off, the 23-year-old has been practising horse riding since the age of six. According to equestrian magazine Horse Sport, she is ranked the fifth-best rider under 25 globally. But it is her runway debut in the womenswear label Coperni that placed her in the spotlight this week. Eve pulled off a casual look with a miniskirt, green turtleneck, modern handbag and oversized white sunglasses.

In the past week, Kwazulu-natal recorded heavy downpours and thunderstorms that caused extensive damage in several areas. On Wednesday morning, a mudslide trapped two pregnant women in their home in La Mercy, in the north of ethekwini. Fortunately, a joint operation between search and rescue teams and the police brought the women to safety without any injuries. South African Weather Service forecaster Julius Mahlangu told the SABC the following morning that the La Mercy and King Shaka areas received 20mm of rain overnight, while areas such as Margate received up to 130mm in one evening. Cloudy weather and isolated showers across the province are expected to last until Sunday, 10 October.

Daily new Covid-19 infections across South Africa are showing a consistent decline. On Monday, only 429 new infections were recorded. With the country on adjusted alert level one following a protracted third wave, fewer hospitalisations and deaths are also reassuring. However, health protocols remain in place and citizens are urged to stay vigilant.

Elsewhere, countries such as Poland and Turkey recorded an increase in Covid-19 infections, with Turkey recording more than 29000 new infections on Tuesday, making this the country’s highest uptick since 30

April this year. In Wales, the government won a vote to introduce Covid-19 passes, something South Africans can also now apply for, following the department of health launching its digital vaccination certificate platform. Meanwhile, South Africa continues with its calls to be removed from the UK’S so-called red list to travel to and from the country. British expatriates in Colombia who have not been home for almost two years added their voice to the calls, urging the UK to review its red list system to travel.

Described as the queen of rock ’n roll, Tina Turner, 81, has sold her music and branding rights for an undisclosed amount to the

What’s

Love Got to Do With It singer became the latest iconic artist to sign over the rights of her decades-old music career. It is believed to be the largest deal ever signed with a single artist in BMG’S history. The music publishing company owns the rights or represents artists including Mick Jagger, David Bowie, John Lennon, Kurt Cobain and Mick Fleetwood. The Guardian reports Turner will continue her career as a recording artist at Warner Music, while the singer said: “Like any artist the protection of my life’s work, my musical inheritance, is something personal … I am confident that with BMG and Warner Music my work is in professional and reliable hands.”

Wheelchair-user robber jailed

A man who robbed a patient in a wheelchair, who had both his legs amputated, outside a hospital has been sentenced to nearly four years in prison. The incident occurred in July but newly released video footage shows how 29-year-old Liam Dallimore from Manchester, England, strolls away, with George Mcewanjones (67) under the impression the young man was assisting him. Instead, Dallimore grabbed Mcewan-jones’ bank card and shoved his wheelchair into a wall before running away. He then withdrew £270 — roughly R5 500 — and spent some of it on cigarettes. Dallimore, a father of one, refused to leave his jail cell during his trial. The young lad’s history is almost as heartbreaking as the crime he committed. Not yet 30 years old, Dallimore has 77 offences on his criminal record and was just five when he was expelled from school. It is understood he was at the hospital because of abscesses on his legs.

Another massive US oil spill

An oil spill of more than 654 000 litres of crude oil in the Pacific Ocean off the California coast caused beaches to close and resulted in an ecological crisis. Operations to contain and recover the oil are underway. The oil was discovered on Saturday 2 October and had spread over an area of 33km2 by Tuesday. Operations at Amplify Energy Corp’s three offshore platforms came to a halt to prevent any further oil leaks on its pipelines. The source of the spill might be a 33cm split in an underwater pipeline. The cause of that split is not yet known. Meanwhile, upsetting images of wildlife covered in oil slick or dead animals washing up on the shore are reminiscent of the Deepwater Horizon incident off the Gulf of Mexico in 2010, the largest spill in the history of marine oil drilling to date, when thousands of animals from many species died after the oil rig exploded.

Al Capone’s items to be auctioned

Personal items of the American crime boss Al Capone are to go on sale to the highest bidders. Firearms, photographs from 1946, personal letters, furniture and jewellery of the Chicago gangster who cofounded the Italianamerican mafia network, Chicago Outfit, will be for sale at Witherell’s Auction House. Al Capone, nicknamed “Scarface”, became leader of the Chicago based Colosimo mob between 1925 and 1931. His favourite Colt 45 pistol is expected to sell for nearly $150000, and his Patek Philippe pocket watch could fetch between $25 000 and $50000. A granddaughter of the notorious gangster, Dianne Capone, told The Guardian the decision to sell the items was based on the fact that she and her sisters were getting older, and were experiencing the increasing threat of wildfires to their homes in northern California. She also said she hoped the items — especially a personal letter written by Al Capone to his son from prison — would emphasize the human side of her grandfather.

Longest Bond beats records

A week ago it was all glitz and glamour as the British royals and the 007 cast made it to the premiere of No Time to Die, the latest James Bond film. This week cast and crew celebrated smashing new records as the film earned more in its opening weekend than any other Bond film. From Friday to Sunday it hit £21-million, according to the UK Cinema Association. This beats both Spectre and Skyfall’s intake of £20-million during its first three opening days. No Time to Die is the longest Bond film — it plays for a whopping two hours and 45 minutes. But Covid-19 restrictions might prevent the film from earning more than Spectre’s $880-million globally, and Skyfall’s $1.1-billion.

Muhammad cartoonist dies

The Swedish artist who made global headlines for his sketch of the Prophet Muhammad’s head on a dog’s body in 2007 has died in a car crash in southern Sweden. Lars Vilks, 75, was living under police protection since his cartoon sparked outrage among some Muslims. Vilks was driving in a civilian police vehicle when it collided with a truck, killing him and two police bodyguards. A police spokesperson told news agency AFP the incident is being investigated but that there was no suspicion of foul play. In 2007, the terrorist group al-qaeda placed a R1.5-million price tag on his life.

Afghan girl’s bird speaks French

A pet bird evacuated from Afghanistan after the Taliban takeover has learned a new word at the French embassy in the United Arab Emirates. How did a bird end up at the French embassy in the UAE, you ask? The French ambassador to the Middle Eastern country, Xavier Chatel, explained on his Twitter account that during the evacuation a young girl and her mynah bird, Juji, arrived at the UAE’S Al Dhafra air base. Despite the girl fighting for her pet to travel with her from Kabul, regulations meant she was not allowed to take it to France. However, after Chatel heard about Juji, he took it upon himself to care for the bird, after which it became the embassy’s mascot. For weeks Chatel tried to teach the bird French words, to no avail, until one day, Juji finally said “bonjour”. The French ambassador said it “went straight to my heart” and that if he could, he would personally deliver the bird to the girl in France.
