Clean environment a right

The United Nations Human Rights Council has formally recognised access to a clean and healthy environment as a fundamental right by adopting a resolution on the right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment, which has been rooted in the 1972 Stockholm Declaration. Inger Anderson, the executive director of the UN Environment Programme, described it as a “breakthrough moment for environmental justice”. The resolution, she said, is a “shield for individuals and communities against a plethora of risks to their health and livelihoods”.
