Egypt gives women gavels

Months after Egypt’s President Abdul Fattah al-sisi made an official call to women to join the country’s council and Public Prosecutio­n, the country’s two main judicial bodies, 98 women have been appointed to the State Council. Until this week’s appointmen­ts, and in effect since 1946, the council has rejected all female applicants. The chief judge swore in the new judges in Cairo earlier this week.
