Handgun Carry – July 2020 Edition

- – SB, Western Cape

I carried a Star PD .45ACP in an ankle holster for nearly ten years and felt odd and ‘undressed’ when not wearing it, such as when visiting the doctor. This was when trouser bottoms were wider – it would be impossible today when wearing business suits. An IWB holster was my next choice, but I did experience some of the symptoms that Gregor Woods mentioned. I also have a full size CZ75 and I certainly could not have carried it as I did the lightweight PD, sacrificing 9 rounds for comfort.

I think it important to carry a handgun while driving in South Africa. When using cross draw holsters, drivers here are at a disadvantage compared with the US, given that the great majority of people are right-handed and we have righthand drive cars. To solve this there are several choices; draw with the right hand and perform contortions if compelled (within the law) to fire through the driver’s window; pass the gun to the weak (left) hand and fire; wear a suitable holster and carry cross-draw on the right hip. The two weak hand options will require extensive practice on the range. I vote for the last option.
