MOA Calculations

-

I have a question regarding the MOA calculations used in the Test Report on p59 of the September/october issue.

André Grobler writes, “With the Brno I managed consistent groups smaller than 15.7mm (0.59MOA) at 50m and, at 75m, the largest group was 23.6mm (0.88MOA).”

The way I understand it, 1MOA = 1.047 inches at 100 yards. That equals 26.5938mm at 100 yards. To convert yards to metres you have to multiply by 1.094. Therefore 26.5938mm at 100 yards becomes 26.5938mm x 1.094 = 29.0936mm which is 1 MOA at 100m.

The 15.7mm group at 50m divided by 29.0936 then equals 0.54 which has to be multiplied by 2 which is 1.08MOA?

Thanks for an excellent magazine. – Stephan Marais, Western Cape

➤ You are right. The author used the Range Buddy cell phone app to do the calculations. Unfortunately the app’s default setting for calculations is 100m, which the author did not change to the ranges at which he conducted the tests. This led to the erroneous results, which we failed to pick up during the editing process. Our apologies for the error.
