Aimpoint Micro H-2 Red Dot Reflex Sight

- by PHILLIP HAYES

AIMPOINT, based in Sweden, has an enviable record of supplying top quality products to hunters, the military and law enforcement agencies worldwide.

The Micro H-2 red dot sight is their latest upgrade, delivering a waterproof, shockproof and nearly indestructible sight for hunting and sport shooting purposes. The similar Micro T-2 is aimed at the civilian tactical, military and law enforcement markets and has 4 night vision compatible settings.

The H-2 and T-2 are extremely durable and their size and weight are almost negligible. Mounting options for AR platforms, shotguns, archery equipment, or game and hunting rifles are included. They are rated to handle recoil from the heaviest recoiling calibres/rifles used for dangerous game.

The CR2032 battery is claimed to last 50 000 hours (5 years) if constantly switched on. Different dot sizes, depending on the Micro sight model, are available in 2, 4 or 6MOA (Minute of Angle).

Flip-up lens covers, to keep lenses clean and dry, come standard. Two zeroing tools are supplied, one that is part of a turret cap, and the second is a separate 3-function tool with a hex key for scope mounting, a turret dial tool and a battery cap remover (a coin will also do).

The H-2 comes with a Picatinny mount, but other mounts are available, for example, should you wish to mount it as a secondary sight to a scope tube or rail at a 45-degree position to cover ranges from 2 to 100 metres.

The H-2 has 1x magnification and a 4MOA dot size with 12 intensity settings for use in daylight and low light conditions. The only drawback is that you have to return the illumination dial to zero to switch it off, however, with a 5 year battery life, I simply left it on.

The unit weighs 94g (sight only) and 130 grams with the mount. This sight can be submersed to 5 metres without any ill effect. The top turret is protected by two pillars – the one in front is angled to prevent gear from snagging.

On the range it was immediately clear that the glass is superb and delivers a crisp, slightly saturated image right to the edge. The small size also enhanced peripheral view when used with both eyes open. Target acquisition is extremely fast and the illumination settings worked perfectly at low settings in the dark, while the brightest setting is almost too bright for sunny days.

Apart from an AR, I also mounted the H-2 on a .375H&H and, after zeroing, proceeded to engage life-sized animal targets out to 100m. At close range, target acquisition was much faster compared to open sights and, at a distance, more accurate than open sights. I also used the sight to shoot a group at 100m and set the intensity of the red dot so that it was just visible on paper. This resulted in groups the same size as those I get when using my low powered (2-8x) scope.

The Aimpoint Micro H-2 is an excellent product that should give years of trouble-free service. A worthy addition to any firearm, the quality of glass, ruggedness and extended battery life makes it a must-have. I found one online at Safari Outdoor for R8 919.
