Mystery Knife

I refer to your July 2021 issue, page 70. The knife Bernard Stiglingh picked up next to the Nwanedzi River is a “Best”. It used to cost about 2 shillings and six pence. – Colin Stephenson, Eastern Cape

I take exception to your statement, “Yes, there were those who broke the law by firing on looters and using unnecessary violence, and they should be prosecuted.” What you are saying is that law-abiding citizens should stand back and watch their property and indirectly their livelihood destroyed by a violent and undisciplined rabble. Yes the modern liberal law says that you should use ‘minimum violence’ to defend your life, this law is unjust and should be changed to allow one to use whatever force is necessary not only to protect your life, but also your property which is part of your livelihood. I consider your statement to be playing into the hands of the criminal. What would you do if you were a farmer and you caught criminals killing or hamstringing your livestock. If the only way to prevent this is to use so called ‘excess force’, it should be treated as justifiable homicide. – Steve Berkemeyer

Thanks you for pointing this out. I have to apologise for not putting the specific comment in context. I was not referring to law abiding citizens protecting their property or lives in accordance with the law, but specifically to video footage of, for example, persons shooting at looters running away. These actions will be hard to defend in a court of law, and the individuals will probably be prosecuted criminally. As law abiding firearm owners we need to ensure that we are up to speed with what we are allowed to do when the need arises to defend ourselves lawfully, and more importantly we have to act accordingly. – ED L-X Firearm Lubricant Winner

Well at 75 I’m a first time winner! Thank you Magnum.

I bought my first Man Magnum magazine in 1976 from CNA in Amanzimtoti while on holiday. This was the first of your magazines with a bikini girl and a six gun on the cover. I got addicted to Magnum and have read it ever since. Still fully armed and active. – John Blunden, Limpopo

Hearing Protection

Thank you for the article about hearing protection (August ’21 issue). Raising awareness about the issue is crucial. Hunters and sport shooters in particular, but also self-defence firearm owners, should make every effort to protect their hearing every time they use a firearm. Ask me, my hearing has deteriorated badly because of my blasé attitude to using earmuffs. Once it’s gone you cannot get it back. Fellow shooters, please do the right thing! – Peter Osborn, Western Cape
