Kampvuur en Kondensmelk
KOOS needs no introduction to our readers having spent 16 years working at Magnum before becoming editor at SA Hunter. Now retired, it seems he has finally had the time to work on a book and share his life-long passion for hunting. Kampvuur en Kondensmelk contains 60 Afrikaans short stories in a 210-page A5 sized book.
Each short story is illustrated with a colour photo or a cartoon by Fred Mouton. Koos has succeeded in mixing an interesting read with some humour, while also touching on philosophical issues surrounding hunting.
In Gister se Spoor he writes: “Daar is sommige reuke en sekere goed wat, as jy hulle sien, onmiddelik goeie herinneringe bring.” Rooibos tea and a tin of Lyle’s Golden Syrup are but two of the items discussed that had a far greater influence on him than just being mere consumables.
’n Man soos Pa explores his relationship with his father and the importance this figure had on his life. Many a hunter will identify with this, and for those who can’t, well, between the lines some good advice is available on how to raise your children in a hunting environment. Many of the stories invite you to smell the fire, experience the bush and spend time under the stars. It even got me to buy a tin of condensed milk to try in my evening coffee while watching the sunset.
