Nomsa Mazwai – aka Nomisupasta – was born in 1985. Her music is a political journal vibrating beneath your dancing feet. This new mum, general manager of Soweto Theatre and SAMA-winning singer released her latest single ‘You are’ in October, and secured herself a spot on the highly impressive lineup for Afropunk Joburg at the end of the year.

Her lyrics are a testimony to who she is and where she comes from – she truly captures the essence of her playful, jovial character and her unafraid-to-speak-truth nature in her work.

Perhaps it is the fusion of traditional Xhosa instruments with commercial drum and bass; perhaps it is the cheekiness of the lyrics. Either way, your head will bop. The new era of sound that Nomisupasta represents is all about the meeting of great African artists, enjoying freedom, and creating their space in music.
