WILD CARD WIN FOR YOUNG KARTING PRO

- Shorné Bennie

Teen karting star, Troy Snyman, has secured a wildcard in the South African Rotax Max ‘Olympics of Karting’ Grand Finals team.

He recently competed in the African Open at Benoni’s Formula K Raceway and came home with four victories and also delivered a unique result.

The 13-year-old Cordwalles learner explained that only one other driver has ever won two classes at the African Open before.

“We had a super weekend all-round and I came home with the winners trophies in Mini and the Junior Max, as well as the berth in the Junior team,” said Troy.

Troy began karting when he was sevenyears-old due to his love for motor sport. So far, he has competed in 152 races, of which he has won 126. The titles he holds include the Rotax NR Regional Colours, KZN Regional Colours, SA Rotax National Champion and the 2020 Rotax African Open in two classes.

His next race will be in December and then the world finals in January. Both races will take place in Portugal. He manages to strike a balance with school and also has the help of his tutor, who works online with him when he travels.

Troy’s goals include winning the finals and teaching others about karting. He added that his parents are supportive of his karting achievements so far.

“My dad is very chuffed with my achievements and is very dedicated to my driving. My mom just wants me to accompany her on all the climbs that she summits, she says it is a peaceful, quiet time and good for the soul. We plan on climbing the big Kilimanjaro on our return from the world finals,” said Troy.
