Asmalls: ‘Our community wanted us back’

-

Following the destruction of their four stores during the July unrest last year, Asmalls has returned.

Director of Asmalls, Yunus Asmall, said that there was an outcry from the community for them to return.

“Four of our stores were destroyed. Our warehouse was looted and destroyed. There was an outcry from the community for us to return. So we took a chance, ensured that we had more security and started up again. We have reopened three of our stores, which includes our warehouse. We have not reopened the Edendale branch as that was completely burnt,” said Asmall.

Asmall said the unrest resulted in many of their staff being retrenched but many have since got their jobs back.

“We thought about our staff. Many of them worked for us for a time and have worked towards the stores. It was very sad when they lost their jobs, but most have returned and we are here for the community,” said Asmall.
