‘Consistency is key’

- Shorné Bennie

For Rivaan Maharaj (18) consistency was key for him achieving nine As for his matric results.

The St Charles College matriculant is going to study medicine at the University of Cape Town. He achieved As in mathematics, physics, biology, afrikaans and english in the As level and advanced mathematics, advanced chemistry, advanced biology and advanced physics in the A level.

Maharaj said that it was important to have a balance to regain energy and focus.

“It was unexpected that I would achieve the results that I got.

Being consistent was important, having a timetable and putting in the hard work was important. I would relax by doing hobbies such as playing soccer, and working with problem solving puzzles. I put in the hard work and when I got the results I did, I knew that I was doing something right,” said

Maharaj.

Maharaj said he is thankful for the support of his family.

“My family was extremely supportive. They ensured that I was always comfortable. They ensured that I was in an environment that was helpful for my learning,” said Maharaj.

His advice to the class of 2022 is to ensure that they are always organised and are consistent from the beginning.

“It is important to take notes and understand from the beginning. Past year papers are important to complete. As you finish a section, then complete that in different past year papers,” said Maharaj.

“It was all about the planning and the mindset.” These are the words of Kyran Otto, also from St Charles College, who achieved eight As in the matric examination.

Otto (18) said that it was important to have a plan in order to succeed.

“Plan accordingly from the beginning; that is the key. For St Charles learners, we had just started using the online learning system just before the lockdown had started and that had helped us already. So during the lockdown and the unrest we had that support online and also support from our educators.

“I had turned my bedroom into my classroom. It is all about the mindset and using that to be focused,” said Otto.

Otto said that he is thankful for the support of everyone during his matric year.

“There are so many people to thank but most importantly it would be the support of my parents. They were my support system and they always are there and have our backs. It was also important to pray, that is most importantly the reason that I did

Rivaan Maharaj achieved nine As. well. I think without it I would have not done as well as I did,” said Otto.

Otto will be studying toward

becoming a chartered accountant at UKZN through a bursary from Deloittes.
