Tempus Fugit!

- By Richard Rangiah, Community Chest director.

Tempus Fugit is Latin for “time flies”. Can you believe it? We are barely done with wishing family, friends, colleagues, etc. “Happy New Year!” and the month of January is over!

Time flies because with each passing year, we need to do so much more in the exact same amount of time as last year. Technology is supposedly a great time-saver. Instead, we find ourselves pressurized into wanting to achieve just one more thing before the day is done.

Here is a thought, what if we resolve to do less instead of more? It does takes great courage to go against the prevailing trend. The Covid-19 pandemic has been in our faces for nearly two years now. If nothing else, the impact of the pandemic has forced us all to slow down. It has given us time to reflect on many things – most importantly, life itself, family and friends and work. Sadly, for some of us, some of these lessons came with a great price, but they remain vital for all of us, going forward.

Tempus fugit! One simple suggestion to slowing down our timelines is to declutter it of activities that do not add value or quality to our lives. To my embarrassment, I have experienced hours wasted trolling social media platforms in search of, nothing! Let us not even mention time wasted binge watching a TV series, that a month from now, I will not remember a thing about it! Imagine, all that time that I could have spent ticking off tasks on my home maintenance “to-do” list.

I spent the past weekend with almost zero TV or social media hours. Instead, I set out to do some home maintenance tasks. Surprisingly, I now feel exhilarated! I had achieved something meaningful! I added value to the quality of my life and to our home.

I think 2022 is going to be a good year after all! If I have not already wished you – Happy New Year!
