Local angler reels in the accolades
Pietermaritzburg angler, Ashandren Pillay, is making ripples in the freshwater fishing community after he landed a 8.35kg catfish in the South African Fresh Water Bank Angler’s feeder competition last week.
He was one of 53 anglers who took part in the event held over two days at the Bloemhof Dam.
Pillay fished for KwaZulu-Natal against eight other provinces.
Apart from having represented his country at competitions in Namibia, he competed against Denmark the Protea’s A and B sides, an invitation side and for the South Fresh Water Bang Anglers Federation.
In October last year his manager, Leon Gunther, selected a few young anglers or ‘young guns’, who managed to enter national competitions with very little training.
Pillay is very grateful to his sponsors, Shaheen Suleiman, of Magma Security, Zahir Ismail, Babloo and Shankaner of Kara Nicha’s.
In the South African Fresh Water angling Federation, accompanied by Tasvir Maharaj, Pillay won the heaviest bag, landed the most number of fish and was placed second overall with three medals for his team. The team itself was fourth.
