Places to be murdered

The crime statistics report for the third quarter of 2021 revealed most murders took place in public places. “A total of 2 599 people were murdered in public places such as open fields, streets, parking areas and abandoned buildings,” said Police Minister Bheki Cele. “The second most likely place for murder to occur is at the home of the victim or the perpetrator. Liquor outlets are the third most likely place to be killed in

South Africa.”

Plessislaer police also recorded 56 attempted murders in the final quarter, the third highest figure in SA, behind Umlazi and Inanda. Mountain Rise Police Station was in 12th spot with 35 cases.

The total number of attempted murders was 5 645, an increase of 192 incidents.

There were also 141 cases of trio cases – which include robbery at homes and businesses and cash in transit heists - the third highest figure in the country.

Plessislaer Police Station took the top spot for residential robberies with 88 cases being reported in the final quarter. It was one of five policing areas in KZN that appeared in the top 10.

Pietermaritzburg Police Station, meanwhile, made the list of top 30 stations for robberies at non-residential premises. It was placed seventh in SA with 37 cases between October and December.
