SA’s ‘Antiques Roadshow’ comes to town

-

Fine art auction house, Strauss & Co, will be in Howick and Pietermaritzburg to value fine art works and collectables and give residents the chance to learn more about the South African art market.

Valuations will be done at Amber Valley from 10am to 2pm on Monday, February 28 and the Tatham Art Gallery from 9am to 4pm on March 1. Entry for the Tatham valuations is a R50 donation to the gallery.

Known for creating an atmosphere similar to the popular BBC television programme Antiques Roadshow, the auction house has, in recent years, discovered some high-profile works.

These have included two works by flamboyant Russian painter Vladimir Tretchikoff, which were sold in the November

2021 auction. ‘Ballerina’ went under the hammer for R2 100 000 and ‘White Orchids’ was sold for R900 000.

During the same sale, ‘Sangoma’ by George Pemba sold for R350 000, and the same artist’s ‘Open

Air Concert’ achieved R400 000. Both of these iconic works came from sellers in KZN.

In addition to the valuation sessions there will be a talk by Strauss & Co’s Dr. Alastair Meredith, titled ‘The South African Art Market through the Pandemic’, at the Tatham Art

Gallery at 6pm on Monday, February 28. Entry is a R30 donation to the gallery.

To book for the talk and more information about the valuations, please email jackie@straussart.co.za or call 011 728 8246.
