Celebrating human rights at the museum
The KwaZulu–Natal Museum in collaboration with the Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) and Centre for Community Justice and Development hosted a Human Rights Month Commemorative event, celebrated under the theme, “The Year of Unity and Renewal: Protecting and Preserving our Human Rights Gains”.
The event saw a number of stakeholders address school learners in attendance about the history and significance of Human Rights Day. Stakeholders also outlined various ways learners can protect and preserve their rights through institutions such as Childline SA and the Department of Social Development to name a few.
Commemorations for the day began at the museum with the “I am the flag campaign”, an initiative aimed at nation building, social cohesion, through highlighting and informing the public about South Africa’s national symbols.
The museum’s education outreach team has been visiting various local schools, educating learners about South Africa’s national symbols, the role they play in unifying South Africa as well as highlighting the history and significance of Human Rights Day.
