Maritzburg Philatelic Society moves to Hilton

-

First established in 1924, the Maritzburg Philatelic Society is leaving the city and moving to Hilton this month to ensure the club continues to function and grow.

Club president, Dave Wyllie, said the new venue will serve stamp collectors from Pietermaritzburg, Hilton, Howick and the Midlands.

Another reason for moving, he added, is to allow the society to meet on a Saturday morning giving those who work during the week the chance to attend.

Wyllie said: “We are optimistic about our move and look forward to many happy years in Hilton.”

Meetings will be held on the third Saturday of every month at 10am and visitors are most

welcome.

The first meeting, which will take place at the 1st Hilton Scout Hall in Magnolia Street, will be the club’s annual general meeting.

The Maritzburg Philatelic Society is an active club and has participated in a number of national stamp competitions. One of their exhibits was awarded a Large Vermeil at a show in Johannesburg, after which it was on display at the Tatham Art Gallery for four weeks.

The society also celebrates National Stamp Day and participates in the Hobbies Fair each year. Wyllie said stamp collecting is still a popular hobby because, in the words of former American president Franklin D. Roosevelt: “Stamp collecting dispels boredom; enlarges our vision; broadens our knowledge; makes us better citizens and enriches our lives.”
