City man murdered in car
Awascase of murder is being investigated after a man shot dead in his car in the vicinity of Bird Sanctuary in the early hours of Monday morning.
The man has been identified as Gary Moodley, who formerly owned the Jonathon’s Spar on Longmarket Street.
It is alleged that, at around 2am on Monday morning, Moodley was shot in the chest inside his car, on the road near Invesco Centre. According to witnesses, the suspect was in the vehicle with Moodley.
“After the gunshot, the suspect got out of the vehicle and fled the scene in a red getaway vehicle, with three other occupants. One spent cartridge was found outside the vehicle,” a source said.
Shammy Govender, of Assist Me Now, remembered Moodley as ‘a very generous man’, who always put his community first. “He was always ready to assist us with whatever donations we needed, in all areas of aid, throughout the city. When we contacted him he would always assist us. He provided us with lots of bread, especially when he was with Spar,” Govender said.
Pietermaritzburg Saps confirmed a case of murder is being investigated. “A body of a 62-year-old man was found inside the vehicle with a gunshot wound on the chest after being shot by unknown suspects. The circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated,” said Saps spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Nqobile Gwala.
